Agroecology

The purpose of this objective was to strengthen the target group in terms of Agroecology. Agroecology refers to agricultural practices that work with nature and not against nature. The following activities took place under this output;

Distribution of seeds (ASDA)

Two workshops were conducted a total of 132 participants comprising of 50 man and 82 woman, who were the beneficiaries of the seed distribution program. The seeds that were distributed ranged from staple crops, fruit trees and vegetables.

Distribution of small livestock (ASDA)

Two workshops with 54 participants were conducted prior to the distribution of the small stock. Out of the 54 participants, 36 beneficiaries were selected and further trained. These beneficiaries received ducks and rabbits.

Greenhouses and rainwater harvesting in three target communities in Namibia (EduV)

As part of this activity, 3 demonstration site where setup in Oshikoto region at Othema yethano, Omaakuku and Oukango womafuma under three community groups. Nelago Community Garden from Othema yethano, Tulongeni Community Garden from Omaakuku and Ndeshihala from Oukango womafuma are the three groups that benefit support in terms of planting nurseries, fencing, water accessibility and gardening materials.

These groups represent a total of 270 people who are indirect beneficiaries from knowledge and practises. Exchange visit involving a total of 3 members from each community garden took place where learning from each other and sharing ideas was facilitated.

Construction of three demonstration fields for agricultural land use (SPP)

In a participatory process, the target group that has already participated in the agro-ecological workshops identified suitable demonstration fields for agro-ecological land use. The following sites were identified in the different localities: 

  • Paarl with a focus on the production and the use of herbs, agro ecological production and practices
  • Wupperthal – heritage (“rooibos and buchu”) crops and agro-ecological production and practices;
  • Carolusberg – agro-ecological production and practices.

A number of engagements were conducted between SPP and the producers/ FSC members on the sites regarding their specific requirements for the sites and the development of the respective sites. SPP provided the following inputs to the respective sites (water, materials for the nurseries, compost, seedling mix, shade netting, seeds, irrigation systems, fruit trees, etc.).
